I suppose I write from my own personal experience, as I’ve always felt more genuine with this approach. As well, witnessing many colleagues, clients, mentors, friends and others apply an approach of ‘building connections with opportunities to showcase one’s capabilities’ (great language, Dawn), has provided examples of best networking practices.

I so agree with you regarding the ‘long-term strategy’ approach to networking! Rather than waiting until job loss and the point of the most intense pain to reach out and build relationships (e.g., Do you know a recruiter who can ‘find me a job?’), it is MUCH more fruitful to build relationships organically, over time.
