Finding Freedom + Creative Expression From the Space and Beauty of Raw Land | Starting Over, Again

Here we are, starting over again. But this time it’s different. It’s raw, it’s minimalistic, it’s hills and mountains, plush green foliage and tall trees.

Simpler inside, so that we can imbibe in the multifaceted outside. Eight and a half acres of timbered Missouri Ozark land, to be specific.

Yesterday was our first full day here — living full-time, that is — after a nearly 2-year transition journey: sold our house on North Padre Island; cleansed of nearly EVERYTHING we owned (furniture, odds + ends, decor, excess clothing, etc.); moved into our 29-foot Brinkley trailer, and for 6 months, plotted next steps from a beautiful RV resort in Corpus Christi, TX.

And, in mid-April, we pulled the ripcord, and sailed eagerly into new horizons. To the Missouri Ozarks we went, and landed here 2 days ago.

So much yet ahead of us. Simple steps and complex initiatives requiring planning, executing, patience, stamina, hope, prayer, determination and fortitude. Creating a home on raw, rough land is not for the faint of heart. There are lots of little (and big!) steps involved to get water, power, sewer, etc. set up. But, thankfully, in today’s modern world, there are also numerous contractors and resources in which to tap for help!

Akin to what my executive and professional job-seeking, board-role vetting and entrepreneurial hopeful clients are undergoing, this process is not short or easy, even if our initial gut desires are to move quickly. Clients come to me, tattered resume in hand looking for a renewed story that will not only open doors, but will also help clarify and guide their minds, souls and bodies toward their next destination.

Sometimes, they are in a panic, a hurry if you will, to take the reins and leap into that next big role. Their hearts, motivations, ambitions tell them, I need to move NOW, quickly and without pause; their realities tell them differently.

As in moving our homes, navigating to new job and career seas takes strategic planning and execution rich with numerous action steps, navigating rough waves and plotting workaround paths when things don’t go quite as planned.

But the ultimate destination port is there, always in the line of vision. And, on the days when the fog is thick and the path seemingly invisible to us, we take a breath. We stop thinking for a few minutes and engage in distractions that fuel our hearts, minds and hope. We focus on conversations with people or move our bodies to the rhythm and sweat of a vigorous workout, or we simply read or absorb into a good TV program.

And, it’s about trusting the process … and self … and most of all, God’s purpose for our lives.

It’s about keeping going, imbibing in the joys and trials and sunrises and sunsets of today. And, the hope of tomorrow.

Please enjoy this footage my husband, Rob, took of the Big Piney River during his morning walk today:
