Plotting a Path Forward in Your Career and Life

Plotting a new path forward can be uncomfortable and even antithetical to what choices we’ve made in the past and/or choices that those people in our inner circle, or the world at large are making.  That’s okay, as long as we are moving ahead with thoughtful consideration, planning and integrity.

Enabling us to more vigorously take the reins and own our forward-looking decision-making and actions is our ability to relinquish old habits, warped vision and blame for unsatisfactory outcomes and liberate energy from initiatives that no longer suit our career and life goals. Once we’ve given the heave-ho to this emotional baggage, it’s time to take the reins of our next chapter.

How Staying the Course Amid Chaos Multiplies Executive Career Success

In my 2+ decades of experience operating and owning CareerTrend through the undulations of economies, cultural evolvements and digital transformation, I’ve seen OVER and OVER how those professionals and executives who take personal accountability for their careers and lives overcome disappointments and multiply successes.

They do this by investing the necessary time and energy, by getting on board with genuine and introspective action to drive next-level outcomes–and ultimately to thrive.

I’ve witnessed first-hand how those who stay the course of integrity helmed by the unchanging, immovable truths, even amid the quaking and chaos around them, ably navigate forward, with vigor and hope.

How Humility Plus Action Equals Muscular Executive Resume Outcomes

In my collaborative relationships blanketed by values-focused Chief Executive Officers, Vice Presidents, Directors and other leaders in start-ups, mid-size and/or large corporate enterprises, I see common threads of sincere humility plus action.

These senior leaders exude a willingness to grow and muscle-up their communications and executive career stories through our exhilarating, often rigorous executive resume writing partnership, one that requires they loosen their grip of control and be guided through unfamiliar territory.

How Marinating Thoughts Feeds Strategic Career Planning

Outsourcing the career storytelling is an agile and wise decision; however, outsourcing the thinking is NOT so wise. Something as personal and potentially revolutionary as career thought-work must be personally and intimately tended.

Borrowing a phrase from Jeff Giagnocavo during his podcast conversation with Pete Primeau, these execs not only are willing to invest in the necessary time and energy, but often luxuriate in the idea of  “working on thoughts purposefully.”

I loved how Giagnocavo and Primeau’s conversation emphasized an idea that I underscore in virtually every prospective client call, that executives must be willing to “carve time out to think about what (they) want … and to let thoughts marinate.”

Only by devoting time to be present–to quietly and deeply think about their next-phase goals–will they be successful in paving their next-phase path.

Akin to strategic planning that a Chief Exec performs for their company, strategically planning their career and plotting a path forward is essential to producing long-term gains.

These executives who seek me out often are in the throes of massive career and life transformation, and often not by choice. However, they do not exude victim mentality or weariness of an ever-changing world and economy; instead, they are consistently optimistic victors, girded by internal poise and a willingness to emotionally invest, and even sacrifice themselves through the process of growth and change.

How Building Career Storytelling Muscle Helps in Plotting a Path Forward

This is because they know the ultimate building of new muscle and insight will help pave their path forward.

They work hard, think deliberately and seek out professional support (in my case, people hire me for rousing career storytelling); they keep putting one foot in front of the other as they are plotting a path forward.

They have a direction; they move. They don’t push toward a self-imposed strict deadline, but instead, set their sights on a directional force that they confidently believe will drive them to their next destination, in due time.
